On humane microblogging architecture
Cross-posted on: LinkedIn
Great article by Andalib Samandari– a case study on Humane Tech values applied to microblogging platforms like X, Instagram, Bluesky, Mastodon, etc. How well do these platforms respect users’ well-being, making users feel cared for, present, fulfilled, and connected?
While there’s a lot of attention today on the negative effects of social media on well-being of individuals and society, which are clearly examined here through the lens of Humane Tech, I appreciate how Andalib also calls out the good practices that are in place. We need actionable examples of what works, as much as we need clear-eyed understanding of what doesn’t. (Another great example of calling out good practices is this site– I’ve been enjoying reading and referencing this site).
I’m excited to be working with Andalib and Erika Anderson on the Building Humane Technology project. More to come on that soon… stay tuned :)
Two exciting announcements: I just launched my Substack, and I’ll be co-hosting a hackathon in a few weeks!
I’m excited to launch my newsletter with a post on humane microblogging architecture. I used humane tech principles to help us imagine better social media platforms, and plan to design and build more humane projects in the near future.
The framework I used was developed by my friend Erika Anderson, and I’ll be co-hosting a humane tech hackathon with her and Jack Senechal on October 4 in San Francisco.
